This ‘Animal Portraits’ calendar highlights 12 special moments photographer Martin Sikma has experienced in the past year. He decided to capture these animals in portrait style, as they showed some deep emotions at that time. To name a few: the arctic ground squirrel (March) kept alarm calling, while all the other squirrels had no clue what was going on (there was no danger). This showed him all the interactions in the group, with youngsters and older squirrels reacting differently. Or the African elephant (April), which walked towards him when he was on a walking safari in Africa. A very smart and curious animal. As he was hiding behind a tree, he was able to photograph the elephant looking at him through a hole in the tree, only a few meters away. Or the Vancouver Island Marmot (August), an absolutely beautiful animal, but also one of the most critically endangered on our planet. As there are only 300 left, it was very special to spend some moments with them high up on a mountain. Or the Guanaco on the hill (November), which kept coming back to him. The guanaco was looking for help, as a puma had caught it young (sadly, there wasn’t much he could do). In summary, all these animals showed some beautiful emotions during the time and Martin hopes these emotions are conveyed while looking at the images throughout the year.
The calendar is printed on high quality 250 gsm / 100 lb semi-gloss silk paper, and is A3 size (Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and rest of the world) or 11″x16.5″ for the USA and Canada. It is wire bound with a hook to hang the calendar in portrait orientation. We aim to reduce the environmental impact by printing locally.
